breve descrizione: «Ho lavorato a lungo coi più poveri immigrati, coi rifugiati, coi clandestini. Ho visto centinaia di stanze approssimativamente ammobiliate con oggetti trovati nella spazzatura per dare l’impressione di una casa, di un posto sicuro, di un fragile momento di stabilità e di dignità. Tutte queste stanze erano identiche alla grotta di Betlemme.
Nella chiesa di Saint Maria Madeleine, a Lille, c’è una cappella laterale che a me sembra l’Europa di oggi. E’ un’architettura sopravvissuta alla sua funzione, sopravvissuta al suo popolo. Non ci sono più immagini, non c’è altare e il tabernacolo è vuoto. Non ci sono più né Dio né fedeli. E’ ciò che rimane di un luogo spirituale. E’ il sontuoso scheletro di qualcosa. L’Europa mi sembra esattamente così.
Forse la morte dell’Europa è stata perfettamente raccontata da Louise Ferdinand Céline nella sua “trilogia tedesca”. In ogni modo, anche se la terra è morta, i bambini continuano a crescere sulla sua superficie, in stanze precarie come quelle che ho appena descritto. Accadrà anche nella prossima notte di Natale, come è accaduto 2015 anni fa in una famiglia di rifugiati».
Questo lavoro è stato realizzato dall’artista come un dono per le celebrazioni del natale 2015 nella città di Lille, dov’era ospite dell comune per una residenza d’artista.

brief description: «I worked long time with the poorest immigrants, with refugees, with illegals. I saw hundreds of rooms roughly furnished with objects found in the garbage to give the impression of a house, of a safe place, of a fragile moment of stability and dignity. All these rooms were looking exactly like the cave of Bethlehem.

In the church of Saint Marie Madeleine, in Lille, there is a side chapel that gives me the impression of Europe today. It is an architecture which survived his function, survived his people. There are no more images, there is no altar, and the tabernacle is empty. There is no more God there nor believers. It is what remains of a spiritual place. It is a sumptuous skeleton of something. Europe looks the same to me.

Maybe the dead of Europe have been perfectly told by Louis Ferdinand Céline in his “trilogie allemande”. Anyway even if a land is dead, babies continue to born on his soil, in the precarious rooms that I just mentioned. It will happen even on the coming Christmas night, like it happened 2015 years ago in a family of refugees».
This work have been made by the artist as a gift for the celebration of Christmas 2015 in the city of Lille, where he was hosted by the town for an artist residency.
